Dog Pet Coat Winter –Safety First for your Dog with Winter Apparel
Even though dogs have a natural coat, they are largely domesticated animals
and have become used to indoor life. This makes it all the more important for
them to wear a proper dog pet coat for winter when outdoors. Essentially, dog
winter apparel, namely dog jackets for winter, are more than a cold weather
fashion statement; they provide a way to keep a dog safe and sound amid the cold
temperatures.
4 ways to keep your dog safe with winter dog jackets while outdoors:
1) Find a winter dog coat that protects both the back and underbelly of the dog.
Not only will this cover the dog’s vital organs, it will also ensure your dog
doesn’t come home with a filthy stomach.
2) Dog coats for winter with built-in hoods or neck coverings are a great option
if:
a) you have a short haired or small dog, or if
b) you have a pup or elderly dog.
Hoods protect your dog from falling rain or snow as well as keep the dog’s head
and ears warm. Neck warmers are a good idea because they can be extended or
retracted depending on the outdoor temperature. If it’s really cold, the neck
covering can be pulled up to the dog’s ears and if the sun pops out, it can be
pulled down to the bottom of the dog’s neck.
Note: if you get a built-in neck warmer make sure it has a slit for the leash to
be pulled through.
3) Seek out fleece dog sweaters or coats. Fleece is a highly suggested material
for dogs sporting cold weather sweaters and living amid cool temperatures.
Fleece can keep a dog warm, is comfortable in that it’s soft and has give, is
breathable, sheds rain and snow, dries quickly and blocks wind.
4) Make sure the garment is washable. Sometimes dog owners get so caught up in
finding the right dog winter jacket that they forget all about the fact that
they’ll need to wash it frequently. Some coats can only handle dry cleaning,
therefore, unless you're prepared to to pay large dry cleaning bills,
consider a coat that can be washed at home.
